Book clubs have been enjoying Chris Bohjalian’s books for some time now, especially since Oprah selected MIDWIVES for her book club a few years back. Chris’s newest book, SECRETS OF EDEN was just released in paperback and is bound to join the list as a book club favorite. From the intense and troubling domestic abuse at the center of the book to the themes of faith and secrets, there is plenty to talk about in this one.
Chris and I sat down to chat last week as he passed through Atlanta on his Secrets of Eden Rock and Roll Paperback Tour (also known as snowlapalooza 2011). We talked about why Chris chose his four narrators in this book and dove into some of the themes and characters. I also got Chris to tell a personal story about the beginning of his writing career that not too many people know. Suffice it to say, if you’re a struggling writer, you’re going to want to listen – and if you’re the super curious type – you may have to do some Googling when you’re done.
At one point in our talk, Chris actually assigned me a letter grade for my interviewing skills. That’s a first for me, and I have to say it was a better than the grade my former boss gave me for humor — but that’s a story for another day!
Not only is SECRETS OF EDEN part of our podcast series here at Midtown Review, but it is also our first pick for Dana’s Book Club! We’ll be having a couple of live discussions in the Atlanta area later this month, and announcing a new pick just after that. For more information on the book club, click here.
