Dana’s Book Club Pick: SWAMPLANDIA!

It already seems like a long time ago that the Atlanta chapter of the Midtown Review Book Club met with author Joshilyn Jackson to discuss BACKSEAT SAINTS, but the truth is it was just last week!  I usually like to post our next pick right away, but I have to admit the joy and book nerd fabulousness that is The Decatur Book Festival distracted me this month!

So, without further ado, I am happy to announce that our September Book Club Pick is SWAMPLANDIA! by Karen Russell.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

Thirteen-year-old Ava Bigtree has lived her entire life at Swamplandia!, her family’s island home and gator-wrestling theme park in the Florida Everglades. But when illness fells Ava’s mother, the park’s indomitable headliner, the family is plunged into chaos; her father withdraws, her sister falls in love with a spooky character known as the Dredgeman, and her brilliant big brother, Kiwi, defects to a rival park called The World of Darkness. As Ava sets out on a mission through the magical swamps to save them all, we are drawn into a lush and bravely imagined debut that takes us to the shimmering edge of reality.

As always, we’d love to have your book club read along with us – or start a Midtown Review book club of your own by clicking here!

If you live in the Atlanta area you can join us to discuss the book.  Go to http://www.meetup.com/MidtownReview/ for all the details and to register!

All members of the Midtown Review Book Club are invited to join WABE’s “Between the Lines” host Valerie Jackson at the Georgian Terrace Hotel at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, for a live taping of the show. The book for discussion will be “We Were Dancing on a Volcano” by Joseph Gatins. Valerie will talk to the author about his lively account of 50 years and three generations of his family, whose fate was deeply entwined with the Georgian Terrace Hotel and the City of Atlanta. The event is free but reservations are required because seating will be limited. RSVP to Chelsea Deedy, chelsea@newaboa.com, or 404-659-0919.
