Horizon Theatre Company Co-founder and Co-Artistic/Producing Director, Lisa Adler, Smoke Ring BBQ Partner & Executive Chef, Jordan Wakefield, and Atlanta Soccerfest VP of Events, Anthony Catalano joined Dana live in studio to talk all things food, soccer and theatre.

Horizon Theatre Company has been bringing exciting area and world premieres of contemporary plays to Atlanta’s audiences under the leadership of Co-Artistic Directors and Founders Lisa and Jeff Adler since 1983. A professional theatre with a reputation for excellent ensemble acting, Horizon produces outstanding new plays by today’s playwrights that reflect and challenge the lives of the diverse people living in the urban Southeast. In addition to producing its mainstage season, Horizon also develops new plays through workshops, readings, and the annual New South Play Festival, dedicated to producing plays from, for, and about the South.

Soccerfest started as a vision in 2010 to bring Soccer fans together and support the USA national team in their World Cup efforts in South Africa. They held the Cabbagetown Soccerfest in June of 2010 and got thousands of fans together to watch USA draw versus England in their first match. And so the concept was born…Atlanta Soccerfest host festivals around the beautiful game of soccer through viewing parties, soccer activities, and tournaments throughout Atlanta’s communities.

Executive chef Jordan Wakefield is a devoted fan of barbeque and Southern cuisine. Establishing an authentic creation of Georgia-style barbeque, Smoke Ring offers a unique take on typical barbeque dishes. Signature starters include Smoke Ring Jerky, Crispy Pig Ear “Fries” (Chipotle Dusted with White BBQ Sauce) and their BBQ Deviled Eggs (BBQ Seasoning, Bacon and Bourbon Marmalade and Chive). Featured entrees include favorites a variety of sliders, small plates, sandwiches, soups, salads and BBQ plates. A variety of sides are offered to accompany entrées including Bacon and Jalapeno Cornbread, 3 Cheese Mac & Cheese, Corn on the Cob with Cotija and much more.

Plus, Adam Gajdharsingh joined the show for our weekly Work Hard/Play Hard segment, highlighting events in Atlanta.

In the headlines:

  • Metro Atlanta based World Changers Church International led by Pastor Creflo Dollar will be flying high and in comfort in the near future.  They are moving forward with plans to buy a $65 million luxury jet.  They say their mission is global ministry and they need the jet to God’s work. Dana says she’s in the wrong business.  What do you think?
  • AT&T has filed patents for what is called “bone-conduction” technology.  It’s technology that’s already used for hearing aids and implants, but AT&T wants to apply the technology to all of your bones – and connect the data to your mobile device.  The idea is that with this technology they will be able to determine your swipes and gestures WITHOUT you having to actually touch your phone.
  • Metro Atlanta leaders have launched plans to increase exports from our city.  Atlanta was only 75th among the top 100 U.S. cities last year in export intensity, which Metro Chamber CEO Hala Moddelmog says is just not good enough. The plan includes online tools and in person training to help SMBs export their products.
  • Update on the story about the NFL (and the Falcons) getting paid by the Department of Defense to “honor” military men and women at games:  Washington is now getting involved… several senators, including John McCain filed an amendment on June 4 to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2016 that prohibits the Department of Defense from spending taxpayer dollars to honor American soldiers at sporting events.
