Kevin Gillese and Dana Barrett

Artistic Director of Dad’s Garage Theatre Company, Kevin Gillese joined Dana live in studio to talk about upcoming comedy events and why improv skills help at work.

Founded in 1995, Dad’s Garage Theatre Company has grown from a small volunteer led organization to a thriving mid-size theatre led by professional artistic and administrative staff that includes over 300 volunteers and performers. In 2013, Dad’s Garage which had entertained more than 30,000 people at their two-theatre facility in Inman Park, was forced to look for a new home as a result of development in the area. Temporarily staying at neighboring 7 Stages Theatre in Little Five Points, the Theatre continues to produce its own productions in addition to public events across Atlanta and the state, and at improv festivals across the continent. Dad’s Garage purchased a new home in the Old Fourth Ward and looks forward to beginning performances there in 2016.

In the headlines:

  •  Sad news Friday afternoon – the baby beluga whale born May 10th didn’t make it.  She died on Friday after failing to thrive, apparently suffering from gastrointestinal problems that made it hard for her to get the nutrition she needed.
  • In happier animal news, American Pharoah claimed the Triple Crown with his win at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.  He is the first horse to win the Triple Crown since 1978 when a horse named Affirmed won.  The year before that Seattle Slew also took the Triple Crown.
  •  Actress Jennifer Bassey, 72, who is known for her 30-year role as Marian Colby on the soap opera All My Children, and roles in the television drama Grey’s Anatomy and the film 27 Dresses, says she wants an apology from the Delta airlines and is considering legal action after she was booted from a flight after a confrontation with a flight attendant that started over restroom hand washing.
  • Independence Day is almost upon us… and if you’re a fireworks fanatic… good news… starting July 1st it will be legal to sell fireworks in the state of Georgia.  Everywhere but Sandy Springs that is.  The Sandy Springs City Council voted this week to impose a 90-day moratorium on retail permits to sell fireworks to give officials time to conform the city’s zoning ordinances with the new law.
